I’m an author exploring anti-fundamentalism after church-sanctioned domestic abuse in high-control religion.

I realized I don’t buy into the beliefs portraye

I realized I don’t buy into the beliefs portrayed in horror movies wjth a religious component anymore because I’m not scared of contrived horror. So this weekend I snuggled in and watched a few movies that a few years ago, would’ve given me nightmares.

Distinguishing true religious horror from storytelling and fiction ushered in a new freedom. I’m much more frightened by Christian Nationalism, Mike Johnson’s theocracy, and the abuse coverups in the church (most recent is IHOPKC) than a “demon.” Who needs Satan when we have Doug Wilson calling for schools to burn and teachers to hang? Something fundamentalists do when they go outside

Something fundamentalists do when they go outside into the mainstream world is mention something that normal to them, without realizing how it sounds to non-fundamentalist ears.

So, when Mike Johnson said on stage that his corn accountability partner is his minor son, people gasped. Mike said it like it was a good thing, even bragging on his son’s clean record (without mentioning his own.)

But the rest of us know:

🌽 Adults should have adult accountability

🌽 Covenant Eyes is spy software that assumes problems exist where they may not

🌽 It surveils and reports in alignment with authoritarian control systems

🌽 shame based assumptions and vilification replace healthy development, discernment, and dialog

🌽 It’s crappy and frustrating and results in encouraging work arounds and dishonesty (my review)

🌽 Adults involving children in their personal behaviors is grooming and a red flag for abuse

Covenant Eyes is a reflection of the man who paid his teenaged “accountability partner” to make it. It’s disturbing foundation begs questions that haven’t been asked. That CE has been an Inc. 5000 fastest growing company and is in place with large evangelical organizations, all the way to our transforming congress, should cause concern.

Jim Bob Duggar thought he could invite TV cameras into his house and abuses and neglects wouldn’t be discovered. Mike Johnson flaunted his arrangement from the stage. Ron Dehaas told his story on his corporate origin website. These men are so accustomed to power and control without question that they’d be surprised to hear anyone had an issue with what they said.

As one commenter said in defense, “It’s just two guys holding each other accountable.”

That’s how Christian Patriarchy slowly changes the climate. Accountability denotes equality. But a 17 year old minor and his boss or a 17 year old minor and his father not equals. Nor is a husband and wife, such as when Anna Duggar was expected to be Josh’s “accountability partner.” The power dynamic is unbalanced and exploits the other.
